This is an excerpt from the novel I entered in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel contest, and sadly, I did not make it to the semi finals. Here it is, I hope you enjoy it.
Prologue
Nathan Christopher Kyle Carlson a son of an Earl with brown cropped curls, a commanding presence and eyes the purest sky blue that anyone had ever seen, had nothing to recommend him. Why you would ask? That had been the question he had asked himself on numerous occasions.
Oh, he knew the cause of his steady demise but, he had not understood why he had agreed to ruin his pristine reputation at such a young age. Ironically his own mother predicted his own downfall when he had come screaming into the world on a dreary day in late September.
Before he could fathom the concept of a black reputation, his mother had exclaimed, "He will break hearts, see if he won't!"
His demise had came about when Vanessa DeMarco sought him out with her light green eyes sparkling up at him, her eyelashes fluttering, and a puppy dog expression on her face. Knowing the woman for as long as he did, he laughed at first. Then, her face had turned serious so he listened carefully as she requested his presence in her father's library.
Later that evening he went and she said the one thing that changed his life. She had explained to him how her parents had forbidden her to see a certain young man that they did not approve of and she wanted his aid in changing their minds by the most oddest way possible.
And, once he listened to all her arguments, he reluctantly agreed.
The one way she had convinced him was by reminding him that he owed her for what she had done for him in the past. And, that she being a friend, knew of his penchant for dodging the societal balls that boasted the most matrimonial marriages. In essence, she knew how to twist the knife, begging with her tears and rushed words garbled along with her hiccups of "I love him so dearly."
In the end, he agreed because he had been naive. He went to her bed that very evening as part of their plan for her to be caught by her parents and would be suitor. They "accidentally" stumbled upon them, therefore causing her to receive her fondest wish. As part of the plan, he refused to marry her and the her one true love stepped in to save her reputation.
The scheme worked and Vanessa in her happy state had obviously spread the gossip to other ladies and therefore his black reputation begun..
His black mark began, his moniker of the seducer of innocents. Which oddly enough did
