Tips for finding support as a single parent

single parents experiencing the same issues. Locally, check into church groups or consult your local newspaper for happenings in the community. Many organizations sponsor singles groups for the widowed and divorced, and may also offer resources for those who have a spouse serving in the military and away from home for long periods of time.

Finally, there will come a time for dating. This can be a difficult situation and confusing for your children, but if handled correctly, it can also be an exciting and wonderful experience. Some things to keep in mind for single parents as suggested by other single parents as well as trained professionals:

1. Start slow. Now is not a good time to be introducing your children to someone who might not be around for the long haul. This doesn't mean single parents can't date and have fun; but until there's a solid foundation, it might be best to keep your dating life and family separate, at first.

2. Make time for your kids. Single parents need a social life too! However, your kids may feel resentment that you're spending time away from them, but if they feel nurtured and respected, you can minimize this. Explaining that you need friends just like they do and reassuring them they are the most important thing to you is what they need to hear.

3. Evaluate your relationship. Not every relationship you get involved with is appropriate to include your children; single parents often make this mistake. Unless it's a relationship you can envision having some kind of future, it's not fair to involve your kids. If it's casual and cool, keep it that way and keep it between you and your new friend.

Raising a child alone can seem to be an overwhelming task. Using community resources, staying organized, and taking care of yourself are just some of the ways you can cope and move on to a better life.
