We will always need to read. Our society strives for historical archives of knowledge, which is usually in the form of written documentation, and the human spirit strives for excitement, for which we have storytelling and various types of creative writing. You can read from a printed publication or an electronic screen, it doesn't matter. Whether you read for knowledge or pleasure is, for the most part, up to you, but the need to read definitely exists.
== Research ==
There are numerous ways to learn all sorts of data. Do you want to find out what's going on in the world or locally? Pick up a newspaper, magazine, or press release. Are you interested in learning more about a particular profession or company? Open a trade journal, white paper, or other specialty publication. Do you want to know the background of a historical figure or celebrity? Check out a biography or autobiography. Do you need to learn how to start (or finish) a specific project? Find a "how-to" book.
And if all other research options fail, you can always find an encyclopedia, dictionary, or thousands of other directories and lists at a bookstore or online. It's ridiculous how much worldly knowledge there is to gain from reading.
== Pleasure Reading ==
Reading for enjoyment is not a lost pastime, either. The entertainment industry is awash with movie and book reviews, plus the books themselves. Certainly the Harry Potter phenomenon has proven two things: 1) Fiction is still an incredible source of fulfillment, and 2) Well-written children's books can also appeal to adults.
You can also feed your spirit with short stories, poems, memoirs, satire, etc. in print and online. Pleasure reading is literally everywhere.
== A Matter Of Trust ==
The ability to read, understand, and retain text is important. However, part of the solution to surviving today's digital world is not only being able to read, but also being able to trust the information. Reading from a source other than a physical book does not mean that one won't learn or get enjoyment from it, but thanks to the ease of publishing online, the Internet is unfortunately rife with misinformation.
Therefore everyone, whether young or old, author or reader, professional or hobbyist, should make a habit of checking more than one resource before attempting to learn from online data. Do your homework and collect information on your subject, even if you trust highly touted, member-driven web sites like Associated Content (www.associatedcontent.com), Wikipedia
