You often hear hyperbole like "strangest season ever" or "one of the greatest years of football we've ever seen." For NCAA college division one football, this year not only are those phrases true, but they barely scratch the surface of a year that has been strange from top to bottom. A top 5 upsets list is made every year. In a season where the #1 or #2 teams have lost nearly a combined 10 times, why not up the ante to a top 10 list?
Here is a top ten list of the biggest college football upsets of 2007. There was a huge abundance of games to choose from, but here's my list of the ten greatest upsets, from ten down to first. So here are my choices for the ten biggest upsets of the year.
10) Navy over Notre Dame
If there has ever been a season where 44 years of past history doesn't matter, this was the one. Navy had not defeated Notre Dame since the college days of legendary quarterback Roger Staubach, but all of that changed on November 3rd.
Point spread wise, this wasn't close to being a top ten upset, but Notre Dame was slightly favored, and Navy had 44 years of history saying that even this year, it wouldn't be so. This season was different, as Navy finally beat Notre Dame 46-44 in triple overtime ending Notre Dame's NCAA-record winning streak against the Midshipmen at 43 games.
If you're Charlie Weiss, why did you not make the FG attempt in the 4th Quarter for the win? Guess I just don't understand coaching geniuses. Congrats to Navythis was a win that was four decades overdue.
9) East Carolina over Boise State (Hawaii Bowl)
They came in as 10.5 point underdogs and with no one outside of the state of Carolina giving them a chance in heck of winning this game. Add in the excitement of flying to Hawaii and a lack of an impressive win all season, and this looked like an easy win for the Broncos.
That went out the window. East Carolina built a huge lead, though a late rally by Boise State tied it in the fourth quarter. East Carolina's kicker, Ben Hartman, nailed a 34 yard field goal as the final seconds ticked away to stave off the Broncos' rally and give the Pirates an extremely unexpected win, as well as one of the biggest upsets of the bowl season.
8) Arkansas over LSU
Set the stage: LSU had already lost once, but a series of losses by everyone trying to take their place at #1 and #2. LSU manages to climb back to the #1 position and faces a one dimensional Arkansas team that is a 13 point dog to the Tigers.
Arkansas was only 6-4 and had been beaten to a pulp by Tennessee
