Senator Obama raised $32 million in January and $7.2 Million since Super Tuesday. Senator Clinton lends $5 Million to her campaign, some of her staff forgoes pay. Romney suspends campaign.
The current batch of revelations makes the campaign very odd indeed. The biggest surprise in the batch: Romney suspends his campaign. He did NOT drop out, but put his campaign on "hold", as such. Many of his supporters were surprised and shocked to learn of his decision. But there's a strange factor in this truth. A suspended campaign can be revived if things change. If Senator McCain's health suffers a blow, or he dies of a heart attack or stroke, the campaign can be revived quickly. The "suspension" allows Governor Romney to pick up what matching funds are left, and watch carefully in the next primaries. Instead of dissolving the campaign, he leaves the superstructure intact. His delegates stay with him until he releases them. Where would he direct them? Or would he let them decide?
This decision by Governor Romney clears the field for Huckabee to gather Romney supporters, or for McCain to pick them up. I really have no idea where they will go. But for now, they are still hanging on, hoping for that miracle which will once again fling him back into the race, as a front-runner. But I see the Romney supporters reluctantly moving to McCain, realizing that he is now the best chance the GOP has of retaining their hold on the White House. It also opens the door for Governor Romney to be the V.P. candidate. This may be a wise move. However, not being privy to Senator McCain's thoughts or Governor Romney's motives, I speculate.
Hillary's campaign, despite her victories on Super Tuesday, is in trouble. Some of her staff is working without pay, and she had to lend her own campaign $5 million. She is obviously outspending her donations. If this doesn't tell you something, you are either blind or living in a dream world. If she doesn't win big on Saturday and over the rest of February, I foresee "Closed" signs on her campaign headquarters.
I've tried to get a good count on delegates. CNN.com has Hillary leading by about 80 delegates at this time. However, Msnbc.com shows Barack Obama with a 4 delegate lead over Hillary Clinton. Another site shows Obama with a commanding 80 delegate lead. A fourth site gives Hillary a fair sized lead. It's impossible to get accurate information if none of the sites agree.
Obama's Organization fund raising brought in $32 Million in January. And these are mostly "small" donations. A lot of it has been raised on the Internet. His staff is certainly well prepared to deal with the electronic age. More so than Clinton's, I'd say.
So, as Romney's campaign fades into the distance, McCain takes his place as the knight on the white horse.
As Clinton burns her own fuel, Obama's cup overflows.
Who's William Cumberland, and who is Charles Stuart? Or is it David and Goliath, now? Only time will tell.
