Online websites with the best resources for genealogy

the information are all free.

A website I have used to look for passenger arrival information on the many ships that brought immigrants to the US in the late 1800's to early 1900's is Castle Garden (http://www.castlegarden.org/) . This is a free site at which you can find out which ship your ancestor traveled on and when he or she arrived, along with the ports the ships sailed from. This information was taken from the actual, handwritten ship logs, so some name spellings can be wrong be creative if you don't find your ancestor on the first try.

Another site that is fun to peruse is Dead Fred (http://www.deadfred.com). There are surname databases and image archives. My favorite are the "mysteries", photographs that users have sent in of people or places they don't recognize, but they have the old photo lying around their house. Who knows? Maybe you'll recognize or find a photo of your ancestor!

Two more great German genealogy sites that are indispensable are Genealogy.net (http://www.genealogy.net/inde x_en.html) and Pommernkontakte (http://pommernkontakte.de/ind ex.html). Genealogy.net, a German website (this link is to the English version) has loads of links and information on resources and mailing lists in Germany. Some of the links do take you to German language sites, however; so brush up on your Deutsch or have a German-English dictionary handy. Pommernkontakte is more of a networking site. It's function is to link researchers together who are focusing on the same region, town, and/or surname in what used to be Pommerania (or Pommern). If you can network with other searchers, you increase your luckand you might find a long-lost cousin!

These are just a few of the many internet research sites that are available. For a very thorough and comprehensive list of internet-based genealogy sites, Cyndi's List (http://www.cyndislist.com/) is the place to go. Happy hunting!
