Poetry: Love unrequited

A December May Romance

Once a noble redwood-in love, it dared to fall;
The other trees didn't understand the meaning of it all.

Some laughed; some scolded, and some just shunned in rage;
How could this foolish redwood fall in love with a tree half his age?
Don't go chasing every piece of bark they warned and cried;
But none understood the depth of love he felt for her inside.

For 900 years the mighty redwood lived and was now the forest sage;
All his forest friends told him that he needed to act his age.
From afar, his love he watched in silent desire;
So full of life, she made his heart catch fire.

Better to have loved and lost is what they all do call;
Whoever coined such silly rubbish, didn't know love at all.
For the next 100 years, in unrequited loved he did suffer and endure;
Finally, his roots lost their desire and he fell to the forest floor.

Lying among the wreckage and past life decay;
Once more he checked to see her look his way;
He thought of the warnings from those that passed before;
Yet his last thought was that his time with her was no more.
