and for how much.

The walk to St Mark's Square took only 5 minutes but as we entered the Piazzetta, which forms an "L" shape with the grand piazza, the queue to enter the cathedral reached from the gates of St Mark's almost to the waterfront. Second Tip: if you don't like standing in line for too long get there early. In fact, it didn't take too long to reach the cathedral doors. Tip no. 3 which is standard for any Catholic country, please dress respectfully; ladies, cover up those arms and neckline and keep the skirt at least knee length; the men have it easier as long as you don't go in beach wear you should be OK.

On entering the Basilica of St Marks you have to be aware that this building is about 1000 years old. It is unlike any other cathedral in Italy because it is built in the Byzantine style and is closer architecturally to Constantinople than Rome. Inside you will be guided round in an anti-clockwise direction. Look up! The dome is covered in shimmering mosaics depicting biblical scenes and allegories. Take a while to suck in the atmosphere and marvel at the decorations and statuary.

If you are interested in knowing about the basilica in any great detail I would advise a tour guide or do your research before you go because once inside you are completely overwhelmed by the amount of detail. Entrance to the basilica is free but it is well worth the few Euros to take the steep stairway to the roof. You pay at the top of the stairs and find yourself in a large space with exhibitions of the history of the basilica and views down into the cavernous space of the cathedral below. You also get your first close up views of the mosaics. Step outside and you have magnificent views of the entire Piazza, the Campanile opposite and then round the corner the Piazzetta and the Doges Palace. But your attention will be drawn to the great bronze horses which are replicas of the originals in the museum and are of ancient provenance.

Back at ground level you could join another long line to go up the Campanile which was rebuilt in 1908 when the original collapsed. From the top of the tower you have views across the Lido and the city but you may be disappointed if the weather conditions are misty.

The nearby Doges Palace contains many great paintings, including Tintoretto, sculptures and the Scala D'Oro, a stairway whose ceiling is gilded in pure gold. If you have time it's worth a visit and there are often special exhibitions.

Avoiding the pigeons and the myriad of vendors trying
