girl said, "YES!" and the young man asked us to dedicate a song to them. The love song he decided on the spur of the moment to start off their engagement with? George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today". I nearly fell off my piano bench.
The drummer, Joe-Joe, was another short fellow in his late fifties I think, and he all but disappeared behind his drum kit which filled a small trailer all by itself. During the show, when the band members were introduced, the rhythm guitarist or bass player would ask Joe to stand up - only to find out he WAS standing up. Joe-Joe always told me when we were breaking down from a show that he wished he had taken up the harmonica.
Rex, the bass player, was the peace keeper of the band. I always turned to him like Luke Skywalker at the feet of Yoda, and most of the advice I got from Rex on how to deal with a personality conflict with the lead singer was spot-on. Lee and I have since buried the hatchet and respect each other a whole lot more than we did when we played together, but we were at each others' throats at the time.
And Alden, the rhythm guitarist would always introduce the George Strait song "Fireman" by saying, (in fun), "Here's a song we played at the volunteer fire department just before IT burned down." All by itself, that was kind of funny in the moment.
But in reality, Alden was a member of a volunteer fire department, and a few years after he started introducing "Fireman" that way, his fire department DID burn down during a bbq fundraiser. The fire department. Burned down. While the firemen and women were trying to bbq a pig, and they watched helplessly.
You just can't make this stuff up.
