Asbestosis explored

Asbestosis Explored.

Asbestosis is a chronic inflammatory lung disease caused by inhaling asbestos fibers in the form of asbestos dust over a long period of time. Years of exposure to asbestos leads to scarring of lung tissue and diminished lung capacity.

*Signs and symptoms
It takes about 20-30 years after the initial exposure for the signs and symptoms to develop. This is because the pathological changes in the lungs due to asbestos occur slowly.

Breathlessness is a common symptom of asbestosis. Initially the individual is breathless on exertion but eventually even at rest, he will be breathless.

Decrease tolerance to physical activity due to premature onset of tiredness is another symptom.

Cough and chest pain is often associated with the disease.

*Risk factors
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral. For this reason, everyone inhales asbestos to some extent. Usually this much of inhalation is not harmful.

The disease Asbestosis is found in people who are exposed to asbestos fibers for a number of years. Those who are at risk of developing asbestosis are those people who are exposed to asbestos moderately or severely for at least 10 years. These are usually workers involved in mining, milling manufacturing or installation of asbestos products. For this reason it is considered an occupational lung disease.

*Complications
High blood pressure in the lungs, heart problems and lung damage are the commonly seen complications of this disease. Lung cancer is the most dreadful complication. The risk of developing cancer is increased if one smokes. Tobacco smoke and asbestos both contribute to each other's cancer-causing (carcinogenic) effects.

*Treatment
The damage caused to the lungs by asbestos is irreversible. Treatment is aimed at preventing progression of the disease and alleviating the symptoms. Elimination of exposure to asbestos, stopping smoking and medication are the line of treatment. Some may even require vaccinations to prevent flu or pneumonia in order to avoid their damage to the already impaired lung condition.

*Prevention
Minimizing exposure to asbestos is the best approach to prevent this disease. In the US, Federal law requires workers in the asbestos industries to monitor monitor exposure levels, create regulated areas for asbestos work, and provide their employees with appropriate training, protective gear, and decontamination hygiene areas.
