KYLIE MINOGUE should be so lucky, lucky, lucky as her new fragrance DARLING brings yet another celebrity perfume in to the world of scents promoted by the rich and famous.
Kylie says the fragrance was designed with softness in mind, with joy and warmth and has an Australian feel to it containing a mixture of passion fruit, amber, sandalwood, star fruit, freesia, lychee, a heart of lily and native Australian flower, boronia.
Kylie is a popular celebrity in the eyes of the world, due in part to her recent cancer scare. In the eyes of many, she's a real darling.
The modern trend in celebrity perfume has opened the door for countless new fragrances to hit the market with celebrities from all walks of life giving their names to a variety of perfumes and colognes. The rich and famous are used to sell anything and everything in today's celebrity mad world, from hair shampoo to shaving razors.
Adding a celebrity face has proved to be a lucrative marketing ploy designed to have consumers buying the fragrance on the basis of the person promoting it rather than on the actual product itself.
The list of celebrity scents has become exceptionally long with everybody who's anybody jumping on the fragrance bandwagon. Could it really be that consumers will buy a perfume based on the face that promotes it? Apparently so.
Will the scent promoted by the celebrity, become stale when the famous person does? Someone may be flavor (or smell) of the month at the moment, but when they fall from grace and popularity, will the fragrance no longer be desirable?
Celebrity scents come and go much in the same way as the celebrities themselves. They both have a shelf life. The popularity of the numerous icon fragrances is an indication of the celebrity culture that has developed in the western world in particular.
The marketing gurus know only too well the sales will rise in relation to the status of the personality involved. The publicity machine will keep rolling until the star fizzles and it's time to move on to a new one.
The implication to the consumer is that the superstar wears the scent or cologne they promote, therefore you should wear it too.
The bottom line for the consumer should be to ignore the face on the packaging and test the fragrance before buying.
Should you buy DARLING by KYLIE MINOGUE?
Perhaps the question is : Is Kylie still a top-notch celebrity
