The first time that I was pregnant, morning sickness in my first tri-mester made it almost impossible for me to function. In subsequent months, the morning sickness did subside, though many times I felt nauseated and unable to eat. Out of necessity, by the time I had baby number five, I had pretty much learned every possible way to eliminate nausea during pregnancy.
What Works Best
* Saltines and ginger-ale. Store these items bedside, if possible. As soon as you wake up in the morning, sip and snack slowly. Add extra time to your schedule, so that you don't have to bound out of bed.
* Eat small, frequent meals composed of bland foods. Chicken broth, dry toast, and anything that you would eat if you had the "flu" work well. By eating frequent, small meals, you'll avoid the urge to overeat, which will almost definitely cause you to be nauseous.
* Take Tums or suck on hard candy.
* Eat what you crave. If you find yourself really hungry for something, even if it seems strange, go ahead and eat it. I can remember one time when after vomiting for hours, all I wanted to eat was a cheese-steak, which is not the easiest thing to digest. Strangely enough, however, I felt much better after I ate it.
When I was pregnant with another child, I was nauseous for much of my pregnancy. I wouldn't vomit, but I just felt sick to my stomach. I was constantly craving sesame bagels with cream cheese, which is really weird because normally I'm not big fan of either food. In any case, I was discovered to anemic during that pregnancy and the doctor gave me a list of foods high in iron to eat. Wouldn't you know sesame seeds are high iron? Sometimes, I think the body craves exactly what it needs.
* Avoid, spicy, hard to digest foods, unless you have a real craving for something specific. Likewise, cream sauces, heavy gravies and strong smelling seafood dishes can do a number on your stomach. Caffeine also will upset your stomach. As much as I love coffee, I couldn't even stand to smell it when I was pregnant.
* Take it easy. Don't overdo it doing pregnancy as stress can be a cause of nausea. Stick to a healthy routine that includes light exercise, such as walking, and plenty of rest.
If your nausea doesn't subside after trying these tips, or if it is preventing you from getting adequate nutrition contact your Doctor. In rare cases, you will be given a prescription medication to help curb nausea, or you may require hospitalization.
