The Case of the Missing Cowgirl Boots

Suspects:

Annie
Bella
Buddy

"Hurry, Annie, we do not want to miss Mama's performance at the rodeo," yelled Peter.

Annie came hobbling down the stairs almost dressed to go out, but she was only wearing one boot. "Peter, I cannot find my other lucky boot. I cannot ride without it."

"What is wrong with the new pair you bought with your winning from last year's rodeo?" asked Peter. He never believed in the silly superstitions about a specific clothing item bringing luck at the rodeo. He knew that Annie and Mama were always winning the events because of their skills and it had nothing to do with luck. He did know, however, that he was in for a scolding from Mama if he did not get Annie and his two little brothers to the rodeo before Mama's event began. This would be the final rodeo Mama rode in before retiring from her rodeo career.

"Those boots are only for use when I am not riding in the rodeo. I did not want to wear out my lucky boots. Please, help me find my other boot!" explained Annie as tears began to fall from her eyes.

"Fine, but if we do not find it in ten minutes you are just going to have to wear one lucky boot and one of your new boots. Shaun! Wesley! Come help us find Annie's lucky boot."

The three of them went up to Annie's room to begin their search. As they ascended the stairs Annie explained that she had left them at the foot of the bed the two nights ago after she had returned from the qualifying rounds at the rodeo. She knew she did not move them and suspected that someone took it.

"Who would want to take your boot, sis?" asked Wesley.

"I know my best friend, Bella, is jealous that I qualified and she did not. She probably took it because she did not want me to win again. She did leave in quite a hurry last night after dinner," explained Annie.

"Maybe she took it, but it is also possible she was just trying to get home before her 8pm curfew. You know how her parents often ground her if she is even a minute late," said Shaun.

As they searched high and low in Annie's room for the missing lucky boot, Peter kept muttering that it was probably Annie who misplaced her own boot. Peter was thinking about all the times he had to help her find her schoolbooks and they ended up late for school. That was last school year, though. This school year, she had been pretty organized and she had even kept her room pretty clean. That was because Mama told her that she would not be allowed to ride in this year's rodeo if her disorganization
