Elijah and the Moon Dance
It was quite late at night and very dark the first time Elijah noticed the changes. He had been sound asleep in his bed on a very starry night, with the curtains pulled far back to let the soft breeze through his room and Elijah could still smell the clean sweet scent of his sheets, fresh from the line as he had drifted away.
It was not until he was deep in his little boy dreams that the magic began. It started as a twitter, like a lightning bug had been set loose, and Eli slowly awoke to the buzzing sound of wings about his ruffled brown hair. Yawning, Eli opened his eyes to investigate, expecting to see a fly zooming around, was shocked fully awake by the sight of the tiny star twinkling over his head and flitting about the room. It was shortly followed by another star, this one smaller, and then a whole group of different sizes and glowing lights.
Slowly, the room filled with a soft glow and stars slid through the air with effortless ease, bouncing off of bedposts and knocking into the mirror. The wind blew them gently into Eli's face and they were wet and tingled against his cheeks. Eli's eyes were now lit up with wonder at the spectacular light show taking place in his room but just as quickly as it began, it stopped again and the little stars filed back out into the night and to the proper places in the sky. Twinkling in and out, Eli gazed at these stars, touching the dewy trails they left on his face, and wondered if it had all been the dream of an eight year old boy whose thoughts ran free in the night.
If it hadn't been for the single fallen star, lifeless beside his pillow the next morning, Eli would have kept believing to was truly just a dream but the tiny particle of evening sky that now tingled gently in the palm of his hand was proof enough to Eli and with a heavy heart, he blew into his hand and sent the tiny ember back out the window where it began.
Taking flight, the little star grew several sizes and gave off a bright glow, then zipped directly into the early morning sky and disappeared behind the forming clouds.
