those 19 pieces down those stairs tonight and up again in the morning. We left everything that we did not need for the night stacked up by the entry to the hotel. Among the necessities, of course, were the cat carrier and the diaper pail. Who knows, perhaps the pail suffered from motion sickness; it had acted like a pail should since we had disembarked.
We started down the stairs followed by the porter with the suitcases I had pointed out that we needed for the night. My husband had the stroller with our toddler asleep in it with the cat carrier resting on the stroller's sun roof. I was holding the wide-awake baby in one arm and holding the pail by its handle with my free hand. On the second stair, the pail gave a sudden jolt. The lid popped off and the diaper pail bounced down the stairs strewing diapers around as if they were rose petals. It rolled across the floor and stopped against the ornately carved counter of the registration desk.
Talk about a hard act to follow. Unable to crawl into a hole and hide, I did the only thing I could do in the circumstances. Head high, I walked down the stairs as if strewing dirty diapers around a grandiose hotel lobby was obviously an everyday event.
The first thing I bought when we arrived at our final destination in Marseilles France was a new, and obedient, diaper pail. Oh, Pepper the cat? Well that is another story.
