I'm really finding it so very funny how much publicity the catholic church has generated for the Da Vinci Code movie free of charge! Any who, reading some of the rebuttals by members of the catholic heirarchy has driven me half insane this evening, and I felt it might be a good idea to discuss the main point the church is so against: that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and had children by her.
Forget Dan Brown. He based his book on the ideas generated by two hippy halfwits whose work has now been shown to be not only frequently erroneous but even inspired by a prank. Brown didn't even do his own research - he let the *wife* do it! lol
All of that serves to discredit the main point (big J had wife & kids) and this is certainly the approach the catholic church will continue to use in their efforts to counter the claims. However, the wife and kids were a reality irrespective of mistakes made by Brown's book, and the whole story would have been much more effective it he had based it around the works of Barbara Thiering or Sir Laurence Gardner.
They point out that although nowhere in the gospels does it explicitly state that Jesus was married, nowhere does it say that he was not. There are in fact a few pointers that suggest he was, but if you're someone with poor knowledge of history (as so many are) then it will go right over your head.
For a start, as Jesus was descended from the line of David and was rightfully king, he would have been expected to marry and have children to continue the royal bloodline. Indeed, it was actually a matter of law that any Davidic king must father at least two sons (in case the first-born died).
There were other laws related to kings as well, such as the special laws for marriage. Since divorce was illegal, but the king had to father sons, they had to ensure his wife was fertile before marriage... but they weren't allowed relations before marriage. So they made a new law for kings giving them, effectively, two marriages. After the first, the king would try to get his wife pregnant, and if he succeeded they would have a final wedding, after which divorce was not allowed. But if she was instead deemed infertile they could legally seperate before a second wedding.
In the Song of Solomon we read about the ointment used in wedding ceremonies - spikenard. It was very expensive and used only during a wedding ceremony when the bride would anoint the grooms feet with it, and then wipe them with her hair.
So we read the story in Luke 7:37-38 and what

Would it really be a problem if Jesus had been married and fathered children? Why do people find this claim so shocking?
I would think that if this were so. That it would be in the Bible telling us so. If we believe that the scriptures are written
The simple answer to this question is no. Jesus was not married to Mary Magdalene or anyone else. One problem with this idea
