There are many candle making projects that are suitable for beginners and children old enough to handle hot wax. You have a great deal of options when going to make your own candles, and some are very simple, while others get more complex. The easiest of candle making projects is the jar candle.
You can buy a beautiful new jar for a few dollars or recycle old jars.
Recycled jars can be anything from a baby food jar to a canning jar and everything in between. Whatever jar you choose it should be very clean and dry. It is best to dry it with a towel and then let it finish drying over night to make sure there is no moisture in it.
Next you will place the wick in the jar. You can buy wicks that are prepared for you or buy wicking cords by the roll and then attach your own bottoms. Bottoms are important because they hold the wick in place. Cut your wick about one inch longer then necessary and attach it to the bottom. Set the metal bottom on the bottom of the jar. Chances are fairly good that your wick will lean one direction of the other. For now that is fine.
In a double boiler, that is for candle making only, melt wax and add colors and or fragrances. It is best to use candle versions because they will be more stable in the hot wax. Once thoroughly melted and mixed, gently pour the wax into the jar while holding the wick up. Once your wax is hard you can trim your wick to about 1/4-1/2" above the wax.
Once your candle is made you can decorate the jar with ribbon, material, glitter, and other items as you see fit. Or you can leave it plain. If this is one project that is too simple for you, you can get more creative by doing layer candles in the same manner. Melt your wax and add your fragrance and colors. Pour it as usually, but only for a portion of the jar. Then let it cool all the way. Add another color and corresponding fragrance to the jar once the first is hard. You can do as many layers as you see fit, but should stick to two or three different fragrances that go well with each other.
There are many other easy candle making projects for beginners and children, but this is a great place to start. Over time you can learn a lot and have fun making all sorts of candles. It only takes a little bit of time and maybe a pinch of imagination to have a lot of fun making candles for your home and gifts for your loved ones.
