The dangers of jogging

Jogging can be good for you BUT there are some dangers you need to be aware of.

1) Heart attacks while jogging. In 90% of these cases the heart attack takes place in an early morning jog. Doctors think that even if you do stretch before running, your body is not fully awake yet and the heart is more likely to be stressed. Also, just because you jog does not mean you may not have a congenital problem or heart and artery disease. Get an annual checkup and watch your diet.

2) Pulled muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Stretch BEFORE jogging and don't over do it. If you aren't used to jogging, you don't just go out and do 5 miles. Start slow and increase your jogging workout until it starts to give you a problem, Then back off a little bit and jog at that level until you are properly conditioned and ready to slowly increase it again.

3) Muggers and rapists. Yes, they are out there. Run with someone else or in well lit populated areas. You can also take a protective dog with you, they can also be a deterrent.

4) Cars. If you jog on the road be sure you wear light colored, bright clothes and jog facing traffic. That way you can see them and they can see you. Do NOT jog IN the road, jog off to the side (shoulder).

5) Falls, sprains, etc. Jog on a smooth surface and pay attention to where you are going. If you have a tendency to daydream when listening to music - don't take your radio, walkman or MP3 with you. And, if you are just plain clumsy - get a treadmill it might be safer.
