Effective Money Management For Your Small Business
Do you know what is more important than making money?
The one thing that is more important than making money is, managing money, personal and business. Here are some steps that you can take to help you manage the money you make from your small business.
Happy customers, cash flow, and being able to manage your accounts properly is what keeps your business successful and profitable. Whether you decide to hire a bookkeeper or an accountant to manage your business financial records, you will still need to understand money management, basic bookkeeping, how credit works, how to read bank statements, tax forms, and accounts receivable and payable reports. You also have to be able to understand, and carefully pick out what form of payment your customers will be able to use (cash, check, credit cards, debit cards or online payment), and establish a payment term, and debt collection procedure that will be used if payments are not received in a timely manner.
Here are some things you need to do in order to be successful at managing your money for your small business.
1. Business Bank Account
Once you have chosen a business name, and registered your business, it is now time to choose a bank and open a business account. The items you will need to take with you to open your business account are identification, business license, business name registration papers, and money to deposit into your account. When you call to inquire about opening a business account, ask how much money you will need for the first deposit. Also, ask about other small business services.
2. Setting Up Your Financial Books
Now you have to decide who is going to set up and maintain you financial books. Are you going to hire an accountant or bookkeeper or are you going to set up and maintain your own financial books? If you decide to maintain your own financial books, you need to invest in accounting software such as Quicken or Quickbooks. This money management software will help you track bank account balances, keep up with merchant account information, keep track of account payable and receivable, and create invoices.
3. Customer Payment Options
Customers like options. They like to choose whether they will pay for their product or service by cash, check, debit, or credit. There are fees that you, as the business owner, will have to pay in order to provide theses payment options to your customers transaction fees, account fees, equipment rental and merchant fees. You need to shop around for the best price for the services you need and will provide for your customers. You should compare prices between 3-5 different banks and merchant account companies. Online payment accounts, such as PayPal, allows your customer to make payment transactions online.
Money management and getting paid are the determining factors whether you succeed or fail. Even though you are ready to make money now, figuring out how your customers will make payments to you, and managing your business in flow and out flow of money has to be number one on your to-do-list. Mismanaging your money will destroy your dreams and your potential for success.
