amnesia. For the essay in your Art Appreciation class, get a group of friends to look at pictures of paintings and sculptures, then do the same with some artists you know, and write about their different reactions. For the Microbiology essay on emerging diseases, track down several researchers who are working on understanding your chosen disease and email some questions about their research.

5) Attend to the basics
Spell check your work, not just with your word processor, but with your eyes. Make sure you're using the right form of "your" and "you're," of "there," "their," and "they're," and so on. Have someone else read your paper to look for typos, grammatical errors, and awkward language. If your professor wants a particular style, such as APA style, be sure to use it.

6) Use the writing center
If your school has a writing center, make liberal use of it through all stages of writing your paper, from choosing your topic, to creating an outline, to checking the first draft for errors in grammar, spelling, and style. Writing center staff members can give you the support and feedback you need to make this essay the best one you've ever written.

Now picture Professor Jones picking up your paper and scanning the first paragraph. Ahhh, she says. Finally! Someone who can write!
