Lowering your electricity bill often depends on what types of things you are using your electricity for. All of us use it for running the washer and the freezer, but some use it for the stove as well, and even the heat (we have an all electric apartment). There are a wide variety of things that can help, some directly related to heating costs, others related to other uses for electricity. Every little bit can help!
Turn it All Off.
This is one of those obvious ones, but isn't always easy to remember. Turn off the TV, lights, and other electronics when you aren't using them. Turn your computer to the energy saving setting so that it "sleeps" when not in use. Don't have multiple electronics running unless you are using them all.
Hang it Our to Dry.
Set up a clothes line and hang your clothes to dry. Doing this with just some of your laundry can help save a lot on the electricity bill. Hanging your towels and sheets up can make a huge difference.
Other Laundry Remedies.
There are lots of laundry tricks and tips that can help you save money on your electricity bill. Make sure your dryer lint trap is clean and that the line is free of debris (often lint!). Also make sure that they stay hooked up properly. This can help the dryer have reasonable energy use.
In addition to that, making smaller loads of laundry can help. The dryer can dry the laundry faster and work less hard to dry your clothes. For the energy used to dry one large load you can dry two small loads, which works out to be more clothes!
This is one area where saving up to buy a new set would help a lot. The newer washers and dryers save a lot of energy, and even water. You can save a lot of money by replacing your old washer and dryer. They use less energy and the dryer spins more water out saving on drying time.
Weather Proof.
Add weather stripping to all the windows and doors. This will save on the heating and cooling bills. You can also add plastic to the windows when they won't be in use and take other weather proofing measures.
If you own your own home you will want to make sure that it is insulated, the pipes are insulated, and that everything is ready for weather, both hot and cold. You can have a professional come in and let you know where you can improve your homes energy efficiency.
With just a little work, you can save money on your electricity bill! You can also call your electric company and find out about money saving programs. Some have options to lower your bill during non-peak hours and save a lot of money. But there are other options for saving money with the help of your electric company. Saving on your electric bill doesn't have to be something you just dream about.
