The lake is still and sheltered
From the wind by poplar trees
There are beaver and turtles, geese and bass
And a handful of chickadees
A soft snow has begun to fall
Not but a moment before
A mist on the lake has steadily risen
And cattails brush together at the shore
Deer leave powdery tracks
In snow that is heavy and thickening
The duck have taken flight for high tree limbs
And the wind has begun to quicken
Soon the path will be a forgotten thought
Covered in a white blanket of sleep
I trudge quietly home in my boots all alone
Before the snow becomes too deep
