Reflections: Dealing with a car that's a lemon

said all cars are lemons and will leave a sour taste in your mouth sooner or later. If you buy a second hand car , no matter what make it is , you will end up with a lemon if you don't have it checked out by an independent motor inspection place prior to purchase. This advice has be expounded so many times now that it should be indelibly etched on every young persons' mind contemplating car purchase. If the car yard insists that it is unnecessary because they have their own inspector then go elsewhere .You are most likely dealing with a citrus grower than a reputable car yard.

If you buy a brand new car then no matter how reliable it is it too will need repairs eventually. Most new cars have what may be described as teething problems. If your new car needs major dental surgery within a few months then you may have bought the proverbial lemon.

In both instances of second hand or brand new car purchase you should have the benefit of warranty. Obviously greater care must be given to a second hand car purchase to rule out the possibility of buying a lemon ,than to purchase of a new car with a long warranty. Warranty issues must be used to discover any "disease" in your car well and truly before the warranty runs out. If you are extremely lucky you may get a replacement car if your purchase was brand new. If the warranty does not satisfy you and you still think you are driving a lemon then you may have to consider selling it. Someone else may not think your car is a lemon if they get it at a good price and can repair it to their satisfaction.

Back when I first purchased a car there were more lemons on the road than on the shelves of a corner fruit shop. These days competition between motor manufactures has cut the number of lemons to a minimum. Reputation for reliability is so strongly promoted by the myriad of car manufacturers that some even offer a five year warranty.

Warranty is all important . I would look to the manufacturer who offered the best long term warranty as a means of eliminating the possibility of buying a lemon. But remember. No matter how good the grower is, all cars at some stage are going to need costly repairs . Just like a lemon those repairs will no doubt leave a sour taste in your mouth.
