Reflections: Dealing with a car that's a lemon

You have to agree a lemon leaves a sour taste in your mouth. If that is the case then ,if you refer to a car as a lemon , all cars are lemons . Whether they are good or bad they will all leave a sour taste in your mouth sooner or later.

Actually the whole idea that a car may be a lemon I believe started with Ford Motor Company's spectacular effort in motoring excellence with its Edsel model. The Edsel became synonymous with a lemon. It cost the Ford Motor Company millions of dollars in lost profit. I also believe it was designed by a "committee" of people interested in its design so I suppose it lends itself to our conception of anything designed by a committee. The point is that no matter what Edsel you purchased regardless of it being new or second hand ,you bought a lemon right from the start.

It would be unfair to think that the Edsel was the only lemon ever made. A bit of research will discover the Triumph stag , the Leyland P76 and other cars produced around the world all competed with Edsel as being the worlds' greatest lemon. One comedian suggested that Leyland should rename the car the P38 as you only got half a car when you bought it. However the comments about the Ford Edsel surpass any criticism of the P76. "Only in America " could well be an expression to describe the designs of many motor vehicles of outstanding style and mechanical excellence built there in the last fifty years.

So you see you do have to be careful to buy a car that is attractive . You may have the best car that has ever been built ,absolutely flawless, but if a female thinks it looks "toilet house " then no matter what you think , you have bought a lemon . No ifs or buts . No amount of argument will convince her otherwise . If it is not pretty then it's a lemon. Ask any female. To them a car has to be pretty. Car salesmen know this fact and unfortunately a lot of young women end up with pretty cars ,pretty much a lemon.

Now before all you young males smirk about a car being pretty and a pretty good trap for females to end up with a lemon , how many of you couldn't wait to sign on the dotted lines of the car purchase agreement yourselves? Your particular lemon had a good skin of wax brilliantly polished to hide all the bog patches .Your lemon even had the tires painted black and the interior vacuumed so you could see that the cigarette burns on the seats and carpets were genuine. In truth most lemons are spruced up .Mutton dressed as lamb so as to speak.

In my opening statement I
