Guide to a makeover for your living room furniture

Look at the 60-30-10 rule when decorating any room, including the Living Room, which is the decorative center of the home, and where we want to show off our style. This rule helps keep our plan in good condition, and brings logic to the whole process of decorating. The goal in any decorating should be harmony. A story can be told in the form of our decorating. It can be unique or it can be similar to what many others are doing. Looking at the 60-30-10 rule, 60 percent of our living room is the walls and ceiling. What we do with the walls and ceiling is most important, since that is what the eye has more room for viewing. More space is in the 60 percent. Plan carefully for the pictures, window treatment, and wall colors that you want to have and make sure that the color scheme fits in with the overall plan. More color will be in the 60 percent, so make it interesting, and not boring, muddy, or too intense. 30 percent of the room is the furniture, floor and rugs or carpet. This is important since people often tend to look down at the floor, than up at the ceiling. This is also where people will see the dirt, stains, and disorder. The color scheme needs to be a dominant three throughout the room. If you have more than three dominating colors, than the room is disordered, and outside of harmony. The couch color or colors should mesh in with the 60 percent of wall and ceiling colors, and designs. Think along the lines of style as well when putting color on the walls, and picking out furniture, window treatment and rug or carpet. Color is first in importance, followed by style: contemporary, chic, vintage, southwestern, country, etc. It is not harmonious to have bright reds all over in a country style interior design. Harmony must prevail in decorating. Human are very color conscious. As a real estate agent, I go into many homes, and quickly am taken aback by color inharmony, or fall in love with a place with an orderly blending of color. Our buyers are also affected by the presence of color. Some colors stand out more than others, so make sure you know what you want the views to feel as they look around the room. Cool colors are relaxing, and fit in with many living room styles. Warm colors are entertaining, but in hot climates, can be uncomfortable at times. Warm colors bring intensity to our decorating. Now, for the 10 percent. We have the walls, windows, ceiling, floor, furniture, but one part of the plan needs to be covered as well. This is the acccessories.
