Tips for building a rustic log cabin

Many people dream of building their own log cabin or home. Just the thought conjures rural simplicity, peaceful quiet, and whispers of the pioneer days. Depending how rustic you wish to be, and the amount of money you are willing to spend, you can have anything from a small cabin to a lumbering architectural masterpiece.

To begin the actual process is to set out on an adventure like no other. There are the obvious steps to take when you decide to build a home, such as obtaining and preparing a building site by setting up basic utilities and having it inspected to meet the local building requirements. While there are probably thousands of tips and things to consider, here a few to get you started:

Research

Doing research is an important step because there are thousands of log home builders out there. Each one of those builders offers different packages for different prices. Learn what is included in each package even "turn key" packages are not the same. Take the opportunity to visit model log homes and speak with the representatives presenting the featured home. Some companies offer workshops for people interested in log cabins, so check availability in your area. Now is also a good time to research maintenance and care for a log cabin, as well as decide how much of the work you are willing to do yourself.

This category should also mention financing. Sometimes a log home purchase is treated differently than a regular home purchase, so research your different financing options.

Design

While it is said that almost any floor plan can be modified for use with logs, it is good to have an idea of what you really want and need. Make a scrapbook filled with cut outs of floor plans, ideas, and designs from log cabin magazines and other sources. Take this book with you when you finally meet with your chosen representative as it will be an invaluable source of inspiration for the final and completed project.

Interior

Once your home is mostly completed, you can add a few personal touches to the design. Use interesting designs with seasoned tree branches for spindles on the staircase or porch railing. Scour flea markets and yard sales for rustic items such as metal buckets, old frames, scuffed furniture, or lanterns that can be used for decorating. Also consider nature inspired decor for a more rustic, rural feel.

Most importantly, be patient. You have waited a very long time for the culmination of your log cabin. However, building your home from scratch can be a lengthy process. The average build time for a log cabin is approximately a year and a half from start to finish. By being prepared with your ideas and financing, you can avoid some common delays and frustrations.
