Valentines's Day: A love disclaimer ...

What is Valentine's Day Anyway...
Is it a time to think lovely thoughts,
Is it a time to share lovely gifts,
Why have it anyway?

Do you suppose its a commercial holiday
Meant only for those who wish to make money,
On the love others feel for each other
Or the guilt people feel if they don't buy a gift?

Might it be a time to show affection,
Towards the ones we love and care for all year.

Might it also be a time to set aside a special
time for that one who is always there?

Could Valentine's Day be omitted
Just as easily as 1-2-3?
And something take its place like maybe
I disclaim I have any love for thee?

I think not! To omitting Valentine's Day altogether would be wrong,
As it seems fitting and proper to remember those we love.
I think it better to spend a few bucks on roses and dinner
And no disclaimer of love should there need to be!

Alas, we have figured this Valentine's Day holiday out,
And realize its not a day to do without,
Whether young or old, female or male, child or friend,
There is never too much love to spread around.

So give this special day a break and do something great,
Wonderful, and sweet for your loved ones,
Be it grandma, mom, girlfriend or child,
And keep this tradition of sharing love first rate!

In the tradition of Valentine's Day I offer this poem above. I often hear complaints about the holidays that they are all meant to sell cards and candy and make the stores allot of money. While I do understand this is true as well, I think it is necessary to have special days for special occasions.

I see Valentines Day as a holiday like a Birthday. Its a special day set aside to celebrate your love for an individual or others you love. As my poem says, there is never too much love to spread around.
My daughter has honored me with lovely candy and different gifts on Valentine's Day many times as she knows I am single and wants to be sure I am remembered. I think a nice gift for a single person of a small box of candy is always appreciated or for a senior citizen who perhaps has recently lost their lifetime partner. It can cheer them up and give them reason to hope for the future.

Sometimes just baking something nice for your child's class will be a pick me up too for the teacher and the students on Valentine's Day and other days as well, like Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter and others is always appreciated.

In a world where it seems we have all grown apart and neighbors hardly know each other anymore, it doesn't hurt to use a holiday to spread alittle kindness. Who knows you might even make a new friend out of the kind gesture.

So I think we need to embrace Valentine's Day and other days that are considered special. It just seems to make life alittle easier to have special occasions to look forward to and make us all feel good.
