Best way to get a website for your business

The best business website just might not be a website! It just might be a site on a blogging platform. Before you dismiss this idea, think about what most business owners want in a website:

1. An online presence showcasing their company's culture and business information.
2. A resource for visitors to learn about the company's products or services.
3. A tool for special offerings and promotions.
4. A lead generation resource.
5. Ongoing customer/client communications.
6. Search engine visibility over time without great expense.
7. Affordability of construction and ongoing maintenance.

8. Ease of use if they are "doing-it-themselves."

All of these goals are possible with a website. And, there are many resources out there for website design, template sites, and custom services with ongoing support. Some are expensive, and some are not. What if I told you that you could spend nothing up front, and as little as $6.95 per month, and you can realize all of the benefits on this list? It's not a problem with a site built on a blogging platform.

Start with the most popular free blogging software on the planet, WordPress. It really isn't software from the perspective of having it on your computer. It resides on a server at your hosting provider. It is the hosting provider that is the only cost in this approach, with excellent WordPress hosting for around $7.00 to $12.00 per month. Many of the "websites" you surf every day are really WordPress blogs. It's possible to construct one that is very similar to the static website. So, let's put aside any concerns that you cannot deliver the visual presence you desire for your business.

Once the decision is made to go with WordPress, and a hosting service is chosen, the WordPress host will have a very quick couple of clicks to get the WordPress platform running. Then you have some fun with Theme selection. There are thousands of totally free themes out there for WordPress. The theme provides the template for visual components and layout aspects of the site. Colors, logos, images, column layouts and more are part of the choice. And you can upload multiple themes to your site and try them one-by-one until you get the look and functionality you want. This really is fun, as you can exercise your creative bent. Though there are thousands of free themes, you might end up with one at some cost, if you're really wanting something special. I chose a "magazine" type format for a recent site
