The birth of a baby should always be a time of great joy and celebration. Somehow a first child has a way of filling the whole family with excitement. It is a time when the new parents are going to need extra support and help. Sometimes being there with a helping hand can be the best gift. Every situation is different, with it's own special challenges. Whatever gift you choose, it should be well thought out for the new mothers individual situation.

The gift giving fun usually begins with baby shower gifts. To avoid duplication of gifts, if there isn't a baby gift register, try and think of a unique baby gift. Unusual or personalized gifts will be treasured and may become the heirlooms of tomorrow. If you know what sex of the baby, buy something appropriate. Great ideas for unique gifts would be a baby sized uniform for Mom or Dad's favorite sports team. Have the family name printed for that extra special touch.

Another unique gift idea is an embroidered blanket. If you are talented at sewing or art, a wonderful needlepoint or hand knitted item is a great way to show that you care and is bound to be treasured by both the child and the new parents. If you aren't able to embroider or sew well there are many stores that will embroider or engrave gifts for you.

The important thing is that you should put some thought into the gift. Think about the family situation. If you know that money will be tight for the new parents then instead of spending a small fortune on a darling little outfit that will be worn only a handful of times, buy a whole range of essentials or a gift certificate.

If you provide a supply of diapers, wipes and essentials, Mom and Dad will have a little more left over to buy that adorable outfit they would love to see their little angel in. Vests and diapers may not be the most exciting gift, but they will be appreciated every day, if not a dozen times a day.

Baby gifts for a new mother can range from the everyday useful items through to adorable indulgent outfits, to toys that will engage and captivate a growing baby. If you decide to buy toys always stick to age appropriate items. Baby will be safer this way. Young babies have limited vision so make colors bold and patterns striking. As they grow babies begin to explore their world and use all their senses. Babies taste everything. One of their first activities is finding their own mouth. From then on everything they come across finds it's way into their mouth. Always give new baby gifts. Older items from mom and dad's childhood years may contain levels of lead that today would be unacceptable.

As with any gift, think about who you are buying for. You may not know anything about this new little baby's tastes and desires yet, but you can look at the new family as a whole and use that to help guide you to that perfect and unique baby gift.
