1. Honesty: Never pretend to have a product or service that will do something it won't. This only leads to disgruntled clients, and eventually a ruined career or business. The more honest you are with your customer base about what you can and cannot do, the better your odds are of closing the deal. Integrity sells. It's a fact.
2. Don't bad mouth the competition: Focus on selling the benefits of your services/products. As soon as you play the bad mouthing game, the energy flow will immediately shift from good the negative. It's extremely difficult to get back on a positive energy flow after you start trashing the competition.
3. Follow Up: Send out thank you cards whenever you can, even if you simply sell a stick of chewing gum. Goodwill is key in any business, regardless of what sort of product you are selling. If you can leave a feel good feeling in your customers, then they will spread that feel good feeling to others when they talk about your company.
4. Don't Take It Personally: Whether you are cold calling on the phone, going door to door to sell vacuums, or trying to close a sales contract for a major firm, it is not a personal matter, it's business. If a potential client doesn't see value in your product or service, don't dwell on it. Follow up with them, and spread that good will, but move on to other customers that may be more willing to invest with you.
