it is really interesting to see the conversions from cartoon costumes to the real thing.
I loved Giselle's character. She is sweet and innocent and the sort of girl who is just so naive that she sees only the good in everyone and everything around her. Amy Adams has such a perfect face and voice for this part they could not have cast a better actress. She arrives in New York, lost and disorientated and feels very small in such a large city. One scene in the film that cracked me up was when she is wandering around looking for Prince Edward after climbing into the real world and she sees a midget walking along in his suit on his way home from work. She runs to him and shouts "Grumpy, I am so glad to see you!" The midget obviously looks really annoyed and Giselle just can't understand what is going on. This did make me chuckle.
In essence the story is a love story, good versus evil, with the outcome being the longed for result of love's true kiss. Like many other fairytale's that have gone before, there is a little bit of everything mixed up in Enchanted and my children quite enjoyed identifying the various aspects from well known and well loved tales they were familiar with. And of course no fairytale would be complete without a few well placed songs, and Giselle is no exception. In fairytale land she sings all the time and so this comes naturally to her in the real world. I thoroughly enjoyed some big song and dance numbers - especially the one in Central Park, where she is accompanied by everyone and his mother as she prances her way through the park singing and dancing.
Giselle is just too sweet to be true and this is actually the basis of the story. She is a cartoon princess thrust into the real world where events and storylines just don't follow the same paths as they would in her world. The viewer is left trying to decide whether the fairytale can last in the real world and whether Giselle will keep her innocent view of romance and the way life works after being exposed to New York City's finest characters.
Of course Prince Edward has followed his one true love in a rescue attempt, but with an evil queen (Susan Sarandon) and her henchman attempting to stop all rescue attempts by killing Giselle, his job has been made all too difficult, not to mention the fact that the single father lawyer, who has been looking after Giselle following her impromptu arrival, has been touched by innocence. Things do start to get complicated for everyone but from the audiences point of view I think it is obvious what will happen in the end although this prior guesswork in no way spoils the enjoyment of this great film.
I went to the cinema on Christmas Eve with my family and watched this and I enjoyed it immensely. I will be buying the DVD when it comes out as well because I think that since Roger Rabbit, where cartoons and real actors collided, there has been nothing in this vain to catch my attention. Even Space Jam which followed in this genre was a little boring and was maybe more male/boy biased. Enchanted captured my attention and for an inspiring and magical film it ticked all the boxes. Maybe it is leaning more to the female audience, although my son enjoyed it, I think every one could probably get a little something out of it. Watch it and see.
