Building a home office space in a closet

Building a home office into a wall closet can be done, particularly if it is of double door design. With 6 to 8 feet of wall space, and 3 feet of depth approximately; enough room exists for an ample workspace area with room for a computer and accessories.

Plan

With the doors open, or removed, measure carefully the available area. This will define the size desk or work top that can be used. After removing the clothing rod, the shelf area above it can probably be utilized for supplies storage. The side pockets beyond the open doors can accommodate shelving designed to your needs. Once the plan has been designed, it is time to acquire the needed fixtures, and materials.

Decorate

This area should be as attractive as possible to make your working area pleasant. Paint as needed, and find an appropriate work light to ease your eye strain. If your air flow is not adequate for reasonable comfort, take the needed action to be comfortable.

Furnishing

It may be more practical to make your own desk, and shelving to fit the area available. This could be a great weekend project for anyone handy with a few tools, and a source of personal pride for a job well done. The chair selected as your work chair can be left within the room when the "closet doors" are closed, if you use the room for other purposes as well. Chose it with that in mind.

Hard wire or not

Those who are using wi-fi need not worry about telephone access in the work closet, and need only concern themselves with an electrical outlet. Wi-fi is recommended for computer services because small areas, and lots of wires can be inconvenient.

Ambiance

Create a pleasant working area, and not just a place to hide your office area. It might be worthwhile to consider insulating the closet area for acoustical considerations. The least amount of external noise is best. Remember, anything you invest in this project will benefit you. Our best work is done when we are happy, and not interrupted unnecessarily. If this were my personal project, I would make it as nice as possible because I am the one who will enjoy the benefits.
