Educational Opportunities for Adult Learners
One only has to look at The National Center for Education Statistics(NCES) to realize that adult learners are no longer a minority. With the economic challenges we face today many adults are realizing a need to further their education. Some are discovering they need to return to the work force just to make ends meet, while others may find themselves faced with having to learn new technology just to keep the jobs they have. Fortunately, there are many opportunities available for the adult learner, from certificate programs to degrees.
Adult learners face special challenges such as language barriers, health issues, and time management just to name a few. The good news is that most communities are stepping up and providing a variety of educational opportunities that fit the adult learners life style. Most communities offer some form of Continuing Education through their community college. Continuing Education Departments are now offering programs and courses geared specifically toward the adult learner by providing smaller classroom sizes, and instructors who appreciate and are aware of the adult learner's special needs.
Not all adult learners are seeking education for financial reason. Many are looking for educational opportunities for the purpose of enhancing their quality of life and as a means to get out of the house and socialize with other adults. Adult learners who find themselves in this category should check out the numerous Senior Citizen Organizations, such as LIR (Learning In Retirement), offered in their community. These organizations are designed and created specifically with the adult learner in mind, offering course from technology to gardening.
Many older adult learners may not be able to take on site classes for various reason. The information highway (the Internet) offers various on-line opportunities where adult learners can obtain the education the seek. Whether it is a refresher course on typing or a desire to learn computers the adult learner can find a host of both free and for-a-fee sites where they can obtain the education they want or need.
The number of adults wanting or needing to advance their education continues to rise and the avenues for them to do so is constantly growing. Regardless of whether the adult learner is 25 or 65 a suitable method of education is available to them. Senior adult learners might find a senior organization more appealing since these organizations provide other benefits such as social gatherings, and find comfort in knowing that the majority of fellow students are likely to be closer to their own age. The younger adult learner might prefer to seek out the opportunities available through community or on-line colleges.
Learning is an ongoing process, and for those we wish to enhance their life by pursing additional education, the opportunities are out there.
