Cleaning is one of those chores that we all have to do, but few people really enjoy. Based on that, cleaning without spending an entire day, evening or weekend on a dreaded project is necessary. Here are a few tips to make this dreaded chore easier, faster, and less painful than ever before.
*Take advantage of small pieces of time. Straightening or cleaning the counter while waiting on the microwave to ding, is one of my favorite methods. Unload the dishwasher while talking on the phone or making a pot of coffee. Set a timer and try to beat your best time, or at least know how long each task takes. I can unload my dishwasher in 2 minutes, which makes me less likely to put off this easy chore, that usually needs done daily.
*Take advantage of television time. Yes, this is license to watch TV! You can accomplish a lot in those five minute commercial breaks. You can also accomplish a lot of laundry sorting or folding during a show.
*Tackle the worst task first. Back to the old philosophy of eating the yucky vegetables first, get the worst part over with, then the rest will seem easier.
*Start in the room that needs the most help. You will feel like you have accomplished something before you are too far into the process.
*Leave each room in better shape than you found it. Back to the old camping adage of leaving the place like you hadn't been there, if you leave each room that way, the house will stay clean for longer.
*Don't be afraid to ask for help, or hire help when needed. We all go through periods of life that we may need an extra set of hands. During those times of illness, stress, business, or frustration, feel free to pay someone else to handle cleaning for you.
Remember, it didn't get this way overnight, and it won't fix itself overnight, either. Just like in moving, or learning a new skill, cleaning takes daily practice. Start over when the house shows signs of disaster, and start over again. Your home and your emotions will both thank you!
