The existence of God is something I've never doubted. As a child raised in a religious system,it was not the system that impressed on me the fact that there was something bigger and grander than any human being.
For me it was as simple as transplanting lily-of-the-valleys that grew in abundance around our home. After placing their fragile roots back into the ground, the next day I would notice how strong and tall they were. Something more than a six year old was responsible for this.
Then again, I enjoyed stretching out in the backyard and observing the insects. So many varieties all going their way as if about some very important business. The birds and squirrels, too seemed to be absolutely perfect in their work.
Trees, flowers, clouds, rain all seemed to be doing very well and even in a child's mind there was a distinct order, something much grander than humans could construct.
As I grew, like all children, the adult world with its sciences and theories and theology attempted to change my simple but profound childhood beliefs. For a while they nearly succeeded. There is nothing like teaching a child that eternal damnation and hellfire will result from not following the dictates of the heads of system to insure that they will never learn the Truth.
Be that as it may, I was fortunate to attend a school in this religious system that in my high school years, my class rebeled. Tired of the 'mysteries' that had no answer we decided to side with the existentialists and declare that God was dead. The school heads took great exception and despite the attempt to discipline us, the attempt failed. For many of us it was the end of our belief system. For others, like myself, it was the beginning of a life long search.
The search ended with a study of the Bible in which I was taught through the
