How to survive the workplace

The key to survival in the workplace is managing yourself. There are some basic strategies to manage yourself in a positive work environment and additional strategies to use in a negative work environment.

In a positive work environment, the first basic strategy is to have a strong work ethic. How work ethic is defined may vary from person to person but it generally covers the following characteristics:

Be on time. This is an easy A. For some supervisors, a person who is on time automatically looks good. Know what time you're supposed to be at work and be at work on time. Avoid being habitually late for meetings and coming in late from lunch.

Be prepared. Know your job and do your job. Become an expert in your field. Take advantage of every opportunity to gain more knowledge about what you do. Take courses for certifications and to gain additional information on a subject you already know well.

Be flexible. Be willing to adjust your time schedule and goals if your supervisor asks you to handle extra tasks. However, if the additional tasks are unreasonable, ask your supervisor to specify which tasks have priorities. Also, be willing to adjust the goals of a project if unforeseen circumstances dictate that they change. Being flexible also means being willing to work with others. If you adopt the attitude that every one brings some knowledge to the table, it should be easier to work with different personalities.

The second strategy is to develop a good relationship with your supervisor and co-workers. Once you are hired, meet with your supervisor to get a thorough understanding of your job duties. Demonstrate a willingness to work with others. Sometimes unnecessary problems are created in the work environment because individuals are perceived as unapproachable.

The third strategy is to seek help. If you don't understand something, seek guidance either by asking questions of others or by doing your own research.

Using follow-up techniques to resolve key issues is the fourth strategy to help manage yourself in the work place. Neglecting to use this technique causes many problems. Follow-up requires keeping track of timelines, making phone calls, sending e-mails or attending meetings.

The fifth strategy is to follow office rules including any established dress codes. Obey office rules or practices that are ethically and morally sound. If you have a problem with an office rule or practice, discuss the matter in a professional manner with your supervisor. Business standards
