Having failed in his first attempt to bring silverware to Newcastle United in the 90s, what makes people think that he can do it on the second attempt? Do people forget that he was the one that walked out on Newcastle United citing that he couldn't take the pressure? After Newcastle United, he has taken charge at Fulham, Manchester City and even England, but it was just the same, he walked out on them citing pressure.
Now years after he walked out of England, he was totally cut out from soccer and how relevant is he now, does he understand the current soccer climate is totally different from his days at Newcastle? People don't just demand success on the field but wanting to see instant results. As many as half of the managers in the English Premier League have been removed already with 2/3 of the season gone.
The current squad is not devoid of talent but players who are living on past reputations. Owen and Duff are two prime examples of footballers who have lost much of their talent to injury and will never be as potent as they were in their heyday. The rest like Milner is simply just wasted potential that has been harmed by the number of managers coming and going. Even N'Zogbia has see his career stutter with the numerous changes. The midfield bar Emre is devoid of creativity and it's no wonder we can't score a goal much less create any chances. Butt and Smith are case studies of why you should retire after leaving Manchester United, they are simply so ordinary once out of Old Trafford.
At most, he is expected to bring back the swashbuckling style of football that the Geordie public so desires, nevermind the results they say. But after some insipid results which saw no goals in 3 matches under Keegan, the Toon Army is starting to feel less optimistic once again. Keegan will certainly need to draw on all of his motivational skills to inspire this team that is so not his style. The best Newcastle can hope for is to survive this season and build on the next season. We have heard that many times over the years from different managers, let's hope Keegan's stay is a prolonged one to make that work.
But then again just like movies, sequels rarely work.
