to illustrate how different love languages and communication breakdowns can keep two people who really love each other from knowing it deep down.
For children, it is even more important to know their parents love them. Saying, "I love you," is one of the most important tasks of any parent. Showing I love you is equally important. A child needs firm roots, and those roots often sprout out of the fertile, stable soil of a parents love for them. Then, as the saying goes, they develop wings to fly also based on that knowledge that they are loved.
A few years ago, my brother passed away at 40 years old. Two years ago, my mother also passed away. My family has learned the hard way that you must tell people you love them while they are still here to hear the words. My dad and I, along with my sister say "I love you" to one another all the time now because we realize how important those words are and how quickly the time to say them can disappear.
For my part, I tell my own children, now grown how much I love them. I've always told them I love them, but I have stepped it up even more now. And, having become a grandmother three times in the last year (2 through marriage, one through birth) I spread my love all over those little ones both in word and deed.
They face a hostile world, and I want them to have no doubt that at least one person adores them. Maybe that will help them to grow up to be adults who have a sense of their own worth, and adults who can pass that love on to the next generation.
