What you need to know about starting your own business

There are several key things you need to know before starting your own business. All of these will be essential to its future success.

1) Will you be comfortable working in a self-employed environment? This is something that you will need to think seriously about, especially if you have come from an employed situation. Self-employment means long hours, commitment, responsibility and no one to shift the responsibility too. The whole burden of the business falls on your shoulder.

2) Family commitment. It is essential before you start a business, that you have the full support of your family, particularly your partner. Your new world is going to impact enormously upon family finances and lifestyle. You may not have the level of free time that you enjoyed in previous work. This will certainly be true in the early years.

3) Research. Before you set up a new business, it will require a lot of research. There are several questions that need to be asked.
a) Are you capable of managing and working the particular business you have chosen?
b) Is there a local, national or international market for the product or service you are selling.
c) Finances. Have you studied the financial position closely? This not only includes the cost of setting up the business, including equipment, offices etc., but also the working capital. Working capital is that amount of money that you will need to cover the shortfall between income and expenditure for the early months until there is enough cash flowing in to cover outgoings.

4) Discussion. Again, before you start in business, but after you have completed all the financial and other information, it is preferable to discuss it with the experts. Your bank, an accountant, or a member of the local Chamber of Commerce may be able to help in this respect.

5) Registration and Taxes. Your business, or you, may need to be registered. It will certainly need to be notified to the Taxation authorities. Unless you have the expertise in these fields, it is preferable to appoint an accountant to look after your affairs.

There are many aspect to starting your own business, but the above are the basic requirements.

With all of this in place and good luck, may you prosper in your new venture.
