There they were two huge trained attack Dobermans. There was a big sign on the fence, "Beware of the Dog". Believe me, anyone who could hear those big dogs barking and growling, would certainly steer clear of that yard. Everyone....that is.....except my nephew. My nephew had a paper route at the time.

Dan, my nephew, has always been very special to me. I have always believed that he is intelligent although the IQ tests say differently. I have felt that he has good brains although he had a lot of difficulty in school and just got his GED at age 22 years. He wanted to be a Veterinarian, but no college would ever accept him with his learning difficulties. My sister, his mother, said he was gifted with animals. I would always nod my head and smile.

Dan was out early in the morning delivering his newspapers. It is my understanding from my sister who was driving him around that cold early morning that he opened that fence door and went right in. People could have said that it was the fact that he didn't take the time to read the warning signs....people could have said that he was just being a head strong teenager...people could have said that he was being just plain stupid. However, what happened next was one of the most amazing things that the owner and my sister said that they have ever witnessed with those attack dogs. After he went into the gate of the fence, he shut the door behind him and started walking to the house. With teeth barred, growling and barking those two attack Dobermans came charging at Dan. My sister said that when she heard the dogs and saw them charging, she screamed. Dan took one look at the dogs, put his hands up in the air in a calming motion, and said in a nice, calm, soft voice, "hey....hey now...." The dogs stopped charging and wagged their tails. Dan delivered the newspaper to the owner who was now at his door with his mouth hanging open. He told my sister that the dogs had never responded like that before and have attacked several people who have ignored the signs on the fence.

It is my advice that if ever you are attacked by a dog, you put something in the dogs mouth that will not hurt you and get away from the dog or you have my nephew with you.
