Why we care so much about celebrities

Today's ever growing obsession with celebrity is because reality TV is making it easier for people to become "D List" celebrities.

It does not take talent, determination, and skill as it once did; all you need to do is embarrass yourself on the latest reality TV show, and the next thing you know, your name is known by millions.

This is creating a whole new generation of kids who are increasingly believing that you are nothing unless you are famous. Studies are showing that they would forgo beauty, intelligence, or talent for fame. It is causing youth to believe that they are never going to be good enough simply being themselves.

I have had my own conversations, some brief, some lengthy, with people of varying degrees of celebrity. Granted, all of them were easier to talk to than a lot of celebrities you come across. The thing that I like about all of them are that they do not come off as someone who thinks that they are better than everyone else because of the fact that they may be richer or more well known than most people. I believe the reason for that is, they put forth honest effort and hard work, and it paid off, just like it is supposed to. I am sure the fact that they are charismatic, or are attractive may have had something to do with it, but it still boils down to hard work and genuine talent is what got them to where they are today.

This is were reality programming can cause more harm than good. You do not have to put forth any effort to become a reality star. All you do is sign a contract and you pretty much are handed over your 15 minutes in the spotlight.

It causes young adults who have no respect, and no concept of having to pay their dues to get what they want. They are indulging in a very common-place human tradition of taking the path of least resistance.

I, for one, believe that if I am to achieve ever any sort of fame, it is going to be due to the work I put into using my talents, not because I swallowed the most amount of live roaches in the shortest amount of time. I will be known and respected for my achievements in what I love to do, not because I humiliated myself in order for the chance to date a washed up musician.
