Etymology:
Kenton was traditionally an english surname that was transferred to a given name.
It has three possible etymologies.
The first and most accepted one is King Town" from "cyne" (Kings) and "ton" (town).
It could also mean Bold Town" from Cene(bold) ton (town), and Bordertown where Kent is an ancient Celtic word meaning Border.

Meaning and Association:
There are two widely accepted meanings of Kenton.
The first is 'from Kent' and hence is used by parents to designate an English heritage.
The second is 'from the Lords Manor' and comes from an embellishment of the names etymology.
This meaning suggests both a nobility of spirit and a purity of heritage.

Popularity:
Whilst the name is relatively obscure today especially in America (978th most popular baby name in 1998), it did have a spike of popularity in the sixties and seventies, most probably due to the influx of English immigrants at that time, however this interest had died down by the early eighties. As of 2000 the name is no longer considered in the top 1000 names at all.
In the rest of the world bar Europe or places colonised by England the name is also quite uncommon.

Famous People:
Kenton Lloyd Boyer (May 20, 1931 September 7, 1982) an American third baseman and manager in Major League Baseball shares this name.
Kent Brockman a newspresenter on the Simpsons also shares this name.

Interesting Facts: Some commentators have suggested that in Bob Marleys classic song, No Woman to cry, the lyric "in the government down in kentown' were actually referring to a personal friend of his who was arrested sometime earlier. Whilst there is no proof for this, it is an interesting possibility.
