The Hispanics are probably the people speaking the loudest, because they are the ones that the spotlight is being put on as far as illegal immigration. There are talks of putting up a wall between the United States and Mexico because of all of the people who live here in the United States but have no papers. There are groups of vigilantes starting up to track down those crossing the borders. However, our largest unprotected border is not our Mexican border, but our Canadian border. We have heard nothing about putting up a wall. The reason why is because of economy. Canada's economy is close to that of the United States. Mexico, however, can almost be considered a third world country with the poverty and poor economy that Mexico has.
That is one of the things that the American people complain about. The Mexican people are sending American dollars South of the border. It is a shame that everything has to be about money, but it is. Most of the American people believe that if a person wants to live here, they should just go through the immigration process, yet, they do not know what that process is, what it entails, and how much it costs. I have heard friends say that if they can't afford to become an American, they should just stay in Mexico. When did we lose our compassion and our mercy? Should we change the Statue of Liberty's poem from "send me your tired, your poor....." to something like, "send me your rich and talented...."?
One of my educated friends with a Masters Degree in nursing made a statement that the only illegal immigrants in the United States are those from Mexico. Again, this shows the honest ignorance of the American people about immigration. It is the American people who really need to be educated about the immigration process so that they can understand the thousands of dollars (yes thousands) it takes to get a green card.
There are other ethnic groups speaking out about immigration, however, the Hispanics have the largest group and therefore are speaking the loudest. Until immigration laws and fees change, there will always be people speaking out against the unfair and discriminating laws of our immigration process.
