The best baby gifts for new mothers depend on a few things: one, if the mother is single or married, two, if she is financially secure or if she is less secure, and three, if she has a lot of family backing her up and supporting her, both financially and emotionally.

If a mother is single, chances are finances are very important to her, so, let's say, if her fellow workers are throwing her a baby shower, it might be best to pull resources and money together to buy her a crib or a stroller-bed, a big expense item that might be hard for the mother to buy herself. If she is not in need of a crib, then maybe a half-year's supply of diapers or standard baby undershirts, pants and blankets would be a good idea.

Every Mom, single or not, can always use the frivolous gifts the mother might not buy herself, such as the pretty frilly outfits for girls or the dressier outfits for boys only good for photographs or brief visits. Babies generally prefer comfort, but these outfits are good for memories later on, marking the uniqueness of the baby beyond day-to-day living.

If she is married, chances are there are two incomes coming in, and she is a little more secure; therefore, the pretty, more impractical things are welcome: extra colorful blankets, stuffed animals, pictures for the walls, carrying bags. Still, friends getting together might consider buying one big gift such as a stroller, buggy, or special carrier for the mother to carry baby while doing chores.

Basically, the most important needs of a new mother are diapers, undershirts, bottles, pacifiers, booties, hats, mittens, thermometers, vaporizers, baby oil, cream against diaper rash. But those basic needs are inexpensive, which she can supply for herself, so again, gifts for new mother should either be something to keep the new mother's spirits up and make her feel supported and loved, or gifts she could use but will be financially hard for her to obtain herself.

Also, if you are buying baby clothes, such as jackets and sweaters, or little suits, it is good to guy them for ages 6-months to 1 year. That baby is growing constantly, and showers are thrown only before the baby is born, and gift-giving is only done in the first months after a birth, so items received for those periods of times will be especially welcome.

One of the greatest gifts one can give to a new mother is a day off. Yes, offer to take the baby for a few hours or a day, so that she can get get some much needed rest. This will rejuvenate her and build up her strength for the days to come in caring for her newborn.
