There are lots of events to see and do around Phoenix during Super Bowl weekend, even if you don't like football. Check out some of these events that are sure to stimulate your mind and body.
Head to historic downtown Glendale to experience the 2008 Chocolate Affaire. With almost 40 different chocolate purveyors selling everything from chocolate banana egg rolls to goat milk fudge you are sure to satisfy that sweet tooth. This event is sponsored by candy maker Cerreta who will offer tours of their factory throughout the event. In honor of the Super Bowl they have created a 300 pound chocolate football. Just try to spike this football in the end zone.
Not ready to give up on your New Years diet? The Chocolate Affaire also hosts the largest gathering of national romance novelists in the southwest. You can meet your favorite author and attend a free writing workshop. The event starts at noon on Friday and runs until 10:00 PM. Saturday the fun begins at 10:00 AM and lasts until 10:00 PM. The event is free as are the workshops. What could be sweeter? Their special events hotline will tell you the entertainment lineup including a list of the authors attending. Do you feel the need for speed? Then Speedworld Dragstrip's Saturday Night Street Drags may be right up your alley. On Feb 2nd for $20 you can race that street car all night long. Gates open at 7:00PM and racing runs from 8:00 PM until midnight. Spectators pay $10 and kids 12 and under are free. Make a day of it and check out the Arizona Drag Racing Associations points series race that starts at 9:00 AM. Speedworld Dragstrip is located at 19421 W. Jomax Road in Wittman, AZ. Would you like to see more of the desert in a beautiful setting? Head to the Desert Botanical Gardens. Take a walking tour of the gardens guided by a docent who can answer any questions you may have. Not in the mood for a walk? On Sundays you can listen to some music for an afternoon of beauty under the sun. You can even order a gourmet lunch for an additional charge from fabulousfood.net . The cost for non members is $20 for adults and $8 for children 3-12. On Super Bowl Sunday you can listen to the Sahnas Brothers and their Spanish Guitar. Maybe you are interested in a different kind of sports event. The FBR open runs from January 28th - February 3rd and bills itself as "the Greatest Show on the Grass". Check out the event that boasts winners such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Steve Jones and Tom Lehman and many more. Come see the entertainment that is happening in the Birds Nest and grab a beer while you watch golf history in the making. General Admission is $25 and can be purchase through Ticketmaster.
There is such a wide variety of events happening during Super Bowl weekend around Phoenix. Why limit yourself to Super Bowl Sunday when you can have fun all weekend long? Broaden your horizons and try something new. You just might discover a new reason to visit Phoenix.
