Poetry: Acrostic poems

An Illusion Of Freedom

Taking the wrong road too many times following
Answers to wrong questions asked.
Killing the truth, obeying the machine.
Innuendos of the heart,
Nothing was what it seemed,
Gaining only the illusion of freedom.

How long did it take to descend into this personal darkness?
Out of control, spiraling downward,
Like the fate of Icarus, who lost his wings when wisdom departed.
Destroyed on impact were all my misguided hopes.

Oppressed by a welcoming gloom, I built my walls to keep love out forever.
Fragile was my courage at best.

Forgetting now how long this has been home, dare I step out?
Released from my silent prison of fear for the first time?
Eyes once closed now seeing the rusty chains of doubt.
Everything is clear to me now.
Do I have the strength to confront these old lies?
Overcoming the obstacles that I once confused for defenses?
My heart will again roam uninhibited into the vast open spaces.
