How to hit a golf ball farther

The modern-age of golf has turned from one of shot-shaping and finesse to raw power and aggression. With many of the newer golf courses lengthening their yardage books to well over 7,000 yards, it is obvious that amateur golfers must strengthen their long game while attempting to maintain consistency. The key to hitting the golf ball longer and straighter off the tee is to build a concrete foundation, make a full shoulder turn, drop the club in the "slot" position, and make a solid finish.

BUILDING A CONCRETE FOUNDATION

Most amateurs' struggles begin with a poor set-up position. Without a strong foundation it is nearly impossible to be a consistent ball-striker. Begin by spreading your legs until you feel as though the outside of your shoulders are over the inside of your heels. This will create an excellent base that will serve you well throughout the entire golf swing. Now bend your knees slightly so most of your weight is being supported by the ball of your feet (this should feel as though you are sitting in a chair). This position should feel extremely solid and is the ideal power-position base from which to aggressively strike the golf ball. Next, place the golf ball anywhere from 1 to 3 inches inside your left heel (for a right handed golfer), and make sure your head is slightly behind the golf ball. You should feel as you are even so slightly behind the golf ball. Now you have created an excellent position to begin the golf swing!

MAKE A FULL SHOULDER TURN

Most amateurs struggle with this area as well. Whether from lack of flexibility or prior injuries, most amateurs do not make a full shoulder turn when swinging the golf club and instead try "swinging faster" in order to hit the golf ball further. This is the easiest and most correctable way to increase consistency and distance off the tee. The key to a successful and powerful back swing is to swing with your shoulders instead of your arms. Begin the back swing by slowly "pushing" your left shoulder back towards your right shoulder. This should create more and more resistance as you near the top of your swing. Again, you are making the back swing with your shoulders and not with your arms. When you reach the top of your back swing your back should be facing your target and most of your weight should be supported on your right side (for a right-handed golfer). You should feel as though you are "coiled" and ready to release a powerful explosion! Now you are ready to begin the downswing!
