Treating diarrhea in infants

Diarrhea is defined as, "an intestinal disorder characterized by abnormal frequency and fluidity of fecal evacuations," according to www.dictionary.reference.com/b rowse/diarrhea. It is normal for all people, including infants, to have periodic episodes of diarrhea lasting perhaps a day or two. However, infants are more susceptible to dehydration and other complications from diarrhea if not treated promptly. It is important to know your infants bowel habits so any abnormalities may be quickly noted and addressed.

Many times bacterial and viral infections will cause diarrhea. Sometimes the exact cause is never discovered and bowel movements quickly return to normal. If diarrhea becomes a persistent periodic problem or lasts longer than 24 hours, your infant should be seen by a doctor. If diarrhea is accompanied by the following symptoms a doctor should be consulted immediately:

1. Temperature above 101F (38.3C)
2. Black or green stool, or blood or pus visible in the bowel movement
3. Extreme listlessness or irritability
4. No wet diapers for more than 3 hours
5. Sunken eyes, cheeks, or abdomen
6. No tears when crying
7. Dry mouth or tongue
8. Dark colored urine

For the occasional diarrhea posing no threat to an infant's health, it is important to replace important fluids lost with electrolytes. Electrolytes are a mix of potassium and sodium the body needs to stay hydrated and function normally. While water would seem to be the logical choice for keeping a body hydrated, water lacks the electrolytes so critical for an infant in need of hydration.

Products containing much needed electrolytes for infants include:

1. Pedialyte - An oral electrolyte solution developed specifically for infants who need to quickly replace electrolytes lost through diarrhea and vomiting. Available at local grocery and drug stores in 8 oz single pack sizes in cherry and apple flavors for $8.99; or 1 liter bottles in unflavored, fruit-flavored, grape-flavored, and bubble-gum flavored sold for approximately $7.00 per bottle. See www.pedialyte.com for special offers, coupons, and store locations for products.

2. Baby's Only Oral Electrolyte Maintenance Solution - An organic oral electrolyte solution made with organic ingredients and no artificial colors or flavors. Available in natural grape and apple flavors in a convenient 32 oz bottle for $3.49 a bottle or $20.97 per 6-pk case. Stores or ordering information may be found at: www.naturesonedirect.com.

When encountering this challenge for the first time in your infant's life, you should contact the office of your infant's doctor to inquire as to whether the doctor will want to see your child or have any special directions for you or your child. It is important to note diarrhea does not usually cause serious problems, but it is most important to address diarrhea quickly so it doesn't escalate into bigger problems putting your infant's health at risk.
