Ways to eliminate nausea during pregnancy

by Suzanne Wesley

Created on: February 01, 2008

The early part of pregnancy is such a roller coaster for many women. At first there is often elation - celebrating this new tiny life growing inside you! Unfortunately, this elation is often quickly competing with intense and early feelings of fatigue as your body goes into hormonal and growth overdrive - preparing for this little life to thrive within you. And then, there's the nausea!

Nausea does not occur for every woman, nor does it occur the same for every woman the same in each of her pregnancies. For some women it really is 'morning' sickness - occurring primarily during the time she is waking up and trying to pry herself out of the bed in the morning. For others (myself included) it was more of an all day queasiness instead of mad dashes to worship the 'porcelain god' as my husband so lovingly quotes regarding the act of actually ... well, vomiting. (No real polite way to say that.)

If you are experiencing severe vomiting episodes, to the point that you fear you aren't keeping any liquids or nutrition in your body, definitely consult your doctor. Even speaking with your doctor's nurse should help to determine if you need some help fighting your bouts of nausea. There are medications that only a doctor can prescribe to help with pregnancy induced nausea. Despite how bad you feel do NOT take over the counter medications (unless advised to do so by your doctor). The first 14 weeks in particular are very critical to your unborn babies development and they are very sensitive to the medications that you take in during this time. Consult your doctor, or any list of approved medications the doctor's office may have given to you on your first prenatal visit, before self medicating in any way. The doctor will not want you to dehydrate and will definitely listen to your concerns.

As for natural cures for nausea that is less severe, the remainder of this article includes a collection of advice that I have found useful during my own two pregnancies.

Morning Queasiness:

Keep a box of saltines or gingersnap cookies in your nightstand. Before you even sit up to rise out of bed try nibbling on a couple of these to settle your stomach. Additionally, a nice hot cup of green tea (no to little caffeine) may help even out any acid churning in your stomach in the morning or any time of day. I found peppermint green tea to work the best, however, other women say peppermint made them feel worse? I say try it and see if it works for you or not. It's certainly worth a try!
