TV show reviews: Battlestar Galactica

modern effects make this TV program one of the best on the air. This program can easily be compare to most Hollywood blockbusters, even surpassing some.

The characters are the most important factor in a hit television program. Characters are the conduit that is used to draw the viewer into the story. If the viewer does not believe the characters they will not believe the world. It takes a variety of characters to make a show a hit and this one is no different. One of the most powerful characters is Captain Adama, played superbly by Edward James Olmos. He is strong and outspoken, talking in a low voice when angry. His greatest flaw is the death of his son Zak. This causes a major rift between Adama and his other son, Lee. Jamie Bamber plays Lee Adama. Lee has a problem with his father. He blames his father for the death of Zak and is not very forgiving. This causes major tension between the two of them while they are trying to save the human race. Amazingly, the most flawed character is a woman. Starbuck, played by Kate Sackhoff, is a smoking, drinking and foul mouthed fighter pilot with a chip on her shoulder. She is feisty, asking a superior officer, how his wife was doing, knowing full well that they were split up. Additional characters include: pilots who are not sure if they are Cylons, a Teacher who becomes the new President, a commander with a drinking problem, a scientist that has betrayed the humans and has fallen in love with a Cylon, and the list goes on. We can relate to these characters and find their flaws to be human.

Over all, Galactica is the best program on television today. It has realistic meaning in our society and keeps us entertained. There is philosophical and sociological that is lacking in most programs. Galactica is the only program, on television today, that can challenge intellectuals and yet entertain without over powering the viewer. If you haven't watched an episode, I suggest starting. You will be pleasantly surprised.
